Shadow is new light

AR supported game exploring relationship between shadow and light

Our inspiration hails from the relationship between shadow and light, which is actually a natural phenomenon we can see every day. But what would happen if we reverse the relationship between these two: making shadow as new light.

Design Process

Inspiration

The idea originated from my reflection on the light and shadow, their twin interchangeable relationship. Also, the fact that dark matter is the primary matter in the universe inspired me. Therefore, I want to do a project that tries to explore the relationship between light and shadow.

Ideate

I came up with the idea of creating an AR game whose goal is to guess which city is hidden in the dark.
  1. The game could be divided into three major parts. A phone scans a triggering image and activates the barrier block.
  2. The phone then works as a flashlight to find the hidden city. Differently, the part of the city only shows in the block's shadow.
  3. By panning and orbiting, the user could have an overall view of the hidden city and should be able to guess which city it was.

Prototype

Based on the unity and AR extension Vuforia, I was able to prototype the product. The major challenge is to achieve the effect of only showing the objects in the shadow. The solution is using creative thinking. Imaging all objects of the city being the targets and the phone (camera/light source) being the attacker, I code using the function raycast to destroy all targets within the views so save all the targets in the shadow.

Next Step

The next step is to create levels for the games and add 3D models of different cities, like New York City, Chicago, and Tokyo, into the game and link them to additional triggering images.
